- Shreyas Iyer was sold to Punjab Kings for 26.75 crore
- Shreyas played for the Knight Riders last season
- Shreyas also led Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 final
Shreyas Iyer went to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at a massive price of INR 26.75 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. The Indian cricketer had broken Mitchell Starc’s record after the Australian fast bowler was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last season for a colossal price of INR 24.75 crore. But later, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bid INR 27 crore for Rishabh Pant.
From a base price of INR 2 crore, Shreyas triggered a massive bidding war. The Knight Riders tried to buy back their former skipper who led them to a title-winning season last season, but they backed out at INR 10 crore. The Kings continued the bidding while the Delhi Capitals (DC) joined in.
For the uninitiated, Shreyas had led the Capitals to the final of IPL 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They went hell for leather to get back Shreyas and continued even after he went past Starc’s tally. After PBKS raised the paddle at INR 26.75 crore, DC eventually threw in the towel.
Shreyas Iyer in decent form
Shreyas has been in brilliant form of late after he scored a hundred for Mumbai againstr Goa in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. He made 130 runs off 57 balls with the help of 11 fours and 10 sixes. On the back of his knock, Mumbai scored 250 for the loss of four wickets after which they went on to win by 26 runs at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad.
PBKS had the highest purse of over INR 100 crore and they made sure of picking up the batter in the auction. The Kings are yet to see the face of players since playing in the final way back in 2014.
Fans, in the meantime, questioned Punjab’s decision to pick up Shreyas at a humongous price. “Shreyas Iyer is not even a sure shot Indian team player in T20I. 26cr is insane,” one of the fans wrote.
