It was one of those vintage thrillers where even 163 turned into a tense, hard-fought chase. Gujarat Titans eventually got over the line against Punjab Kings by four wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 3, but not before being pushed deep into the final over.
The result handed Punjab Kings their second defeat of the season, and a second on the bounce, but Shreyas Iyer’s side will take plenty of heart from the fight they showed after dragging the contest to the brink.
For all of Gujarat Titans’ joy at the finish, questions will once again be asked of their middle order and their inability to shut the door on a chase that should have been sealed far earlier. Shubman Gill wore the broadest smile at the end, but the Titans will know they made far heavier weather of the pursuit than they needed to.
Punjab, meanwhile, can walk away frustrated but far from deflated. Defending a modest total on a surface that offered enough for disciplined seamers, they kept finding a way back and nearly pulled off what would have been one of the steals of the season.
The Ahmedabad pitch, as it turned out, was far from straightforward for batters. It was not unplayable, but it demanded method, patience and precise shot selection. This was not a surface for reckless strokeplay, and the batters who adjusted best were the ones who looked most in control.
It was the seamers who dictated terms for most of the night on a track where hard lengths and subtle changes in pace proved the most effective weapons. The spinners, by contrast, found little assistance, with minimal turn on offer and little margin for error.
In the end, Gujarat got the points and Punjab were left with another defeat, but the narrow margin told its own story. This was not a chase bossed by the Titans, but one they survived.
