Arsenal get pecked by the seagulls in Brighton rout, Spurs' losing streak continues

Arsenal's perfect start to the Premier League season came crashing down as Brighton stunned the champions 3-0. Tottenham also remained winless after a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa, while Everton and Newcastle picked up victories.

Arsenal's perfect start to their Premier League title defence came crashing down on Saturday as Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning 3-0 victory over the champions on the south coast.

Arsenal had won seven successive matches across competitions since the start of the season, including their opening four league games, but were thoroughly outplayed by a Brighton side celebrating their 125th anniversary.

Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a low effort that went in off the post before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton's advantage with a similar finish following a counter-attack.

Arsenal struggled to find a response after the break and Brighton added a third when Chema Andres headed home from close range. The hosts could have extended their lead further as Arsenal's defence continued to come under pressure.

The result lifted Brighton into third place and handed Arsenal their first defeat of the season.

SPURS' WOES CONTINUE

Tottenham Hotspur remain without a Premier League win after suffering a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa.

Villa took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Johan Manzambi tapped in after Tottenham were temporarily reduced to 10 men with Micky van de Ven receiving treatment for a cut face.

Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa's advantage in the 67th minute before Emi Buendia produced a stunning long-range strike 11 minutes from time to put the visitors firmly in control.

Tottenham finally found their first league goals of the season late on, with Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke reducing the deficit, but the comeback came too late.

Villa secured their first league win of the campaign, while Tottenham's difficult start continued. Spurs have now lost three of their five league games, with their other two matches ending in draws.

The defeat adds to the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi, whose side also suffered a League Cup defeat earlier this week. Tottenham had invested heavily during the summer, spending around $400 million on a major squad rebuild, but the results have yet to follow.

To make matters worse, Spain right-back Pedro Porro was forced off with an injury in the first half.

NEWCASTLE HOLD ON

Newcastle United claimed a 2-1 victory over promoted Hull City, handing the visitors their first league defeat of the season.

Newcastle raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening seven minutes, with Joe Willock and Lewis Hall finding the net in quick succession.

Hull fought back after the break and Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back midway through the second half, but Newcastle held on to take all three points.

EVERTON EDGE IPSWICH

Everton continued their unbeaten start with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

Thierno Barry scored the only goal of the game, giving Everton another three points and moving them into the Premier League's top five.

The result kept Everton unbeaten while Ipswich were left empty-handed after a closely fought contest.

Coventry City were due to travel to Nottingham Forest later on Saturday, with the visitors still searching for their first points of the season.
