A massive religious gathering in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore where devotees performed an elaborate consecration ritual using nearly 11,000 litres of milk turned the temple premises into a striking visual of devotion and scale.

The event took place at the Pataleshwar Mahadev Temple in Satdev, located in the Berunda region, where a 21-day-long Mahayajna (grand religious ritual) concluded with a ceremonial abhishek of Maa Narmada. Videos circulating online showed a milk tanker being used to pour large quantities of milk as part of the ritual, with devotees gathered in large numbers, chanting and participating in the ceremony.

The consecration was carried out following traditional practices, with priests and devotees performing the ritual worship in a deeply devotional atmosphere. The visuals, featuring streams of milk flowing during the offering, crowds lining up, and the temple decorated with lights, spread across social media, drawing both awe and debate.

The 21-day event, which began on March 18, was marked by daily Mahahavan rituals, where sacred fire ceremonies were conducted using approximately 21 quintals of materials each day. Over the course of the event, nearly 41 tonnes of havan materials, including herbs and offerings, were used, alongside contributions of gold and silver into the sacred fire.

Devotees also participated by offering coconuts in large numbers, seeking spiritual merit, while the event concluded with a large-scale bhandara (community feast), where thousands were served prasad.

The Satdev region holds deep religious significance and is believed to be the Tapobhumi of the Sapt Rishis. According to local belief, the seven sages performed intense penance here, after which Lord Shiva is said to have manifested as Pataleshwar Mahadev. The site has historical roots as well, with references to patronage during the reign of Ahilyabai Holkar, further cementing its place as a spiritual centre.

Organised under the guidance of Sant Shivanand Maharaj, the event saw elaborate arrangements, including a massive five-acre marquee, decorative lighting, and continuous chanting that added to the immersive religious experience.
