If football can be cruel, it seems to reserve its harshest lessons for Senegal. Just when the Lions of Teranga looked set to script one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, history repeated itself. After watching a two-goal lead disappear, Senegal were left devastated by a contentious VAR-awarded penalty that handed Belgium a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory and a place in the Round of 16.
Youri Tielemans converted from the spot in the 125th minute after a VAR review ruled that Lamine Camara had fouled him inside the area, completing Belgium's astonishing fightback from two goals down. The victory sent the Red Devils into the last 16, where they will face the winners of the United States' clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on July 6.
For Belgium, it was one of the great escapes of the tournament. For Senegal, it was another crushing chapter in a story that has become painfully familiar.
Belgium vs Senegal, FIFA World Cup 2026: Highlights
SENEGAL TAKE CONTROL
The final score will show Belgium progressed, but for more than 80 minutes Senegal looked every bit the better side.
Pape Thiaw's men played with intensity and conviction, pressing high, defending with authority and repeatedly exposing Belgium's vulnerable back line. They should have been ahead inside the opening quarter-hour when Ismail Jakobs' dangerous cross was spilled by Thibaut Courtois, only for Ismaila Sarr to stretch and steer the loose ball against the post.
The warning signs continued and the breakthrough finally arrived in the 25th minute. Sadio Mane's teasing cross found Sarr, whose header crashed back off the upright before Habib Diarra reacted quickest to turn the rebound home from close range.
Belgium's only meaningful response before the break came through Maxim De Cuyper, whose curling strike was brilliantly tipped over by Mory Diaw as Senegal deservedly carried a 1-0 lead into half-time.
The Lions of Teranga tightened their grip six minutes after the restart with one of the goals of the tournament. Moussa Niakhate's inch-perfect long pass dropped over the Belgian defence and Sarr brought it down exquisitely on his chest before shrugging off two defenders and smashing an unstoppable finish beyond Courtois.
At 2-0, Belgium looked beaten.
Even as the Red Devils dominated possession, Senegal remained disciplined without the ball and dangerous on the counter, limiting Belgium to speculative efforts while appearing to cruise towards a famous place in the Round of 16.
LUKAKU SPARKS THE COMEBACK
Belgium manager Rudi Garcia rolled the dice at half-time, replacing the ineffective Charles De Ketelaere with Romelu Lukaku in search of inspiration.
For much of the second half, the substitution appeared to have little effect. Senegal's defensive organisation frustrated Belgium at every turn, while Courtois was still the busier goalkeeper whenever the African side broke forward.
Then, almost out of nowhere, the match turned.
Thomas Meunier burst down the right and drilled a low cross into the six-yard box, where Lukaku darted ahead of his marker to turn home in the 86th minute.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Barely three minutes later, Leandro Trossard floated an inviting delivery into the area and Tielemans rose highest to power a header beyond Diaw, completing an extraordinary comeback and dragging Belgium into extra time from a position that had looked beyond rescue only moments earlier.
The additional 30 minutes were a stark contrast to the chaos that had preceded them. Both teams became increasingly cautious, with neither willing to commit bodies forward as penalties loomed.
CONTROVERSY AT THE DEATH
Just when a shootout appeared inevitable, the game's defining moment arrived.
Deep into the second period of extra time, Tielemans chased a loose ball across the face of goal before going to ground under a challenge from Lamine Camara. Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee pointed to the penalty spot, sparking furious protests from the Senegal players, who surrounded the official in disbelief.
Tielemans ignored the commotion, smashing his penalty high into the top corner in the 125th minute to complete Belgium's astonishing escape and send the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
The decision is certain to dominate the post-match debate, but it should not completely overshadow Belgium's resilience. Written off with minutes remaining, they somehow found a way back through Lukaku's impact and Tielemans' leadership to keep their World Cup dream alive.
For Senegal, however, the final whistle brought only disbelief. They had outplayed one of the tournament favourites for much of the evening, struck the woodwork twice and stood within touching distance of one of the greatest victories in the nation's footballing history before watching it all unravel.
The manner of the defeat made it all the more painful. Just months after their Africa Cup of Nations triumph descended into controversy and ultimately slipped away, the Lions of Teranga were once again left to grapple with a result that will be remembered as much for the officiating as the football. Whether the penalty proves to be justified or not, the sense of injustice will linger in Senegal, whose golden generation has again found itself on the wrong side of football's finest margins.
Belgium march on with renewed belief. Senegal leave Seattle with only heartbreak, another unforgettable performance, and the feeling that one defining moment denied them the famous World Cup night they had earned.
