NZ vs ENG: As it happened

Day 1 of the Test match witnessed England making the most of the green surface. They opted to bowl first and struck early by dismissing Devon Conway in just the second over. Despite the conditions, there wasn’t much swing in the air or movement off the pitch, allowing most of New Zealand’s batters to get starts. However, none managed to convert them into substantial scores.

Kane Williamson, making a comeback from injury, looked in fine form and anchored the innings with three successive fifty partnerships. Tom Latham edged one behind, Rachin Ravindra fell to a surprising full toss, and Daryl Mitchell succumbed to a well-directed bouncer. Williamson appeared set for a memorable century but fell short by seven runs, undone by extra bounce.

Tom Blundell also struggled with the variable bounce, becoming Bashir’s second victim. The off-spinner was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four scalps and running through the New Zealand lower order as the hosts lost five wickets in the final session. New Zealand ended Day 1 at 319/8 against England.
