If the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is Bengaluru's most exclusive penthouse, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru threw the loudest, most chaotic house party of IPL 2026. At the heart of it all was Tim David, the DJ, bouncer and main act rolled into one, dictating the tempo with a brutal late-night set. By the time the hosts had dressed up the night with a record-shattering 250, their highest total against Chennai Super Kings, the five-time champions looked less like contenders and more like uninvited guests who realised too late they were at the wrong address.

It was brutal and belligerent. The Southern Derby turned into a disorienting nightmare for the visitors, leaving Ruturaj Gaikwad’s men nursing a Sunday night hangover long before the final over was bowled. CSK were bowled out for 207 in 19.4 overs, but the chase had slipped away much earlier as big guns Sanju Samson and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to fire at the top.

Sarfaraz Khan, a Rs 75 lakh buy, brought some life to CSK’s night, smashing 60 off 25 balls when the party had already slipped out of their control. Young Prashant Veer added 43 off 39, while Jamie Overton chipped in with a brisk 37 off 16.

But the damage had been done early. The top order never got CSK onto the dance floor, and in a chase that demanded constant tempo, they were always a step behind. By the time the middle order tried to lift the mood, the party had moved on, leaving CSK chasing shadows in a game that was already out of reach.

"Well, even I was surprised, to be honest. Great fight by Sarfaraz, Prashant Veer, Jamie Overton, and even to some extent, Shivam Dube. So I think, maybe I would have, contributed more top of the order, you never know, we would have chased it down. So it's definitely on me today," said CSK's captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, taking the blame for their defeat.

The 43-run win made it two in two at home for RCB, a statement that the defending champions mean business this season.

For CSK, it is now three defeats in three. Both batting and bowling have lacked spark. Without MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis, they have looked like a side out of rhythm, still searching for an entry into a party that has already moved on.

TIM DAVID IN BEAST MODE

The undisputed hero of the night was Tim David, who played DJ and destroyer in equal measure. His 70 off 25 balls, packed with eight towering sixes, kept the energy high and the crowd on its feet, every hit another beat that CSK simply could not keep up with.

By the end, the chase of 251 felt less like a contest and more like a long, awkward exit. The music was still playing, the lights were still on, but for CSK, the night had ended much earlier.

The Tim David-led onslaught felt like a tectonic shift in the Southern Derby. Invited to bat first on a surface with a hint of slowness, RCB did not rush through the initial phase, with Virat Kohli and Phil Salt taking their time to get going, not panicking when they made only 17 in the first three overs. On a sluggish outfield, there was not much value for shots, until RCB decided to hit them over the ground and into the stands.

The evening began with the familiar roar for Virat Kohli, who looked in vintage touch during his 18-ball 28 before an uncharacteristic lapse saw him depart inside the powerplay. Dropped on 7, Kohli played a few lovely no-look shots before he was outfoxed by Anshul Kamboj, who adjusted his length after seeing the star batter coming down the track. Shivam Dube, who had dropped him earlier in the night, took the catch to ensure CSK did not pay a lot for their mistake.

However, any hopes CSK had of a breakthrough were quickly extinguished by Phil Salt and Devdutt Padikkal. Salt's calculated aggression (46 off 30) provided the perfect launchpad, but it was Padikkal who truly set the tempo. Returning to his old stomping grounds, Padikkal played a fluent, rhythmic innings of 50 off 29 balls, finding the gaps with surgical precision and ensuring the run rate never dipped below the danger zone for the visitors.

The real bad trip for Chennai began in the final third of the innings. When captain Rajat Patidar joined Tim David, the match transitioned from a cricket contest to a demolition derby. Patidar was imperious, smoking an unbeaten 48 off just 19 balls, but he was content to play the supporting role to David's absolute carnage.

Tim David functioned like a human subwoofer, turning the Chinnaswamy into a den of noise with a breathtaking 70 off 25 deliveries. David's assault was headlined by eight towering sixes, three of which came in a single, soul-crushing over against Jamie Overton. He hit four sixes in the over, including a 107-meter monster that flew over the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Every time a CSK bowler missed their mark by an inch, David punished them by a mile. By the time the final ball was bowled, RCB had hammered 101 runs in the last seven overs, leaving a shell-shocked CSK unit looking for the nearest exit.

THE COSTLY NO-BALL

Interestingly, David was bowled on 28 in the 18th over by Anshul Kamboj. However, Kamboj had overstepped, and David earned a reprieve as it was called a no-ball.

Together, David and Patidar added 99 runs for the fourth wicket in just 35 balls, putting the game firmly beyond CSK's reach in Bengaluru.

No bowler was spared. Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj and Overton all came under heavy fire as RCB exploded in the final 10 overs, plundering 159 runs in that phase.

It was a 250-proof batting masterclass that effectively ended the contest before the second innings even began.

Buoyant after back-to-back wins, Royal Challengers Bengaluru will travel to Guwahati on Friday, 10 April, for their first away game of the season against the in-form Rajasthan Royals. Having won all their away matches during last season's title-winning campaign, RCB will look to gatecrash parties on the road once again.

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings have a five-day break to rest and reset before hosting Delhi Capitals in Chennai on Saturday, 11 April.
