J&K Thang-Ta Championship kicks off - Greater Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 24: Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Thang-Ta Championship opened today at Srinagar’s Polo Ground Indoor Hall, drawing talented martial artists from across the region. The three-day event will select the UT’s representatives for the upcoming 30th National Championship in Uttarakhand.

Organised jointly by the J&K Thang-Ta Association and J&K Sports Council, the tournament features competitions across sub-junior, junior, and senior categories. Winners will advance to the national championship scheduled for January 4-6, 2024, in Uttarakhand.

   

“This championship demonstrates our commitment to preserving and promoting traditional martial arts,” said Sports Council officials at the inauguration, highlighting their focus on nurturing local talent for national competitions.

The event has attracted widespread participation from district-level athletes, signaling the growing popularity of Thang-Ta, a traditional martial art form that combines physical prowess with mental discipline.

The finals are expected to draw significant crowds, with prominent sports personalities slated to attend. The organizing committee acknowledged the Sports Council’s crucial role in elevating the tournament’s status and supporting regional sports development.
