Set a course for fun. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” has finally announced its Season 3 premiere date, marking one of the most hotly anticipated seasons of any “Trek” show in some time. “Strange New Worlds” will return July 17 on Paramount+, with weekly episodes rolling out after that.

When last we saw the crew of the USS Enterprise, the Federation starship was being swarmed by a Gorn fleet. It didn’t look good. But we know from all the many clips that have been released of Season 3 — as well as, you know, “Star Trek” history as this is a prequel series — the Enterprise survives. And all sorts of shenanigans are ahead.

It appears the entire crew is turned into Vulcans at one point. That there’s an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit episode, recalling the Dixon Hill holodeck adventures on “The Next Generation.” That there’s a rom-com episode. And one where the characters are transformed into the fashions of the ’60s “Original Series.”

“I believe ‘Star Trek’ can only go on if you take big bold swings,” franchise head Alex Kurtzman told IndieWire last summer. Big swings such as the musical episode of “Strange New Worlds” that became an instant fan favorite. “If you play it safe, it won’t last. And that is going to get a lot of reaction. It’s the nature of ‘Star Trek’ fans, it’s their reaction to have a big debate about what you like or don’t like about ‘Star Trek.’ That’s the point. That’s what it means to be a ‘Star Trek’ fan. I think that’s a good thing.”

“Strange New Worlds” stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, along with guest stars Rhys Darby, Patton Oswalt, and Carol Kane, plus special guest star Paul Wesley as one James Tiberius Kirk.

The series is showrun by Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers.
