Nottingham Forest receive immediate Ange Postecoglou message - 'I wasn't banking on it'

by · NottinghamshireLive

Nuno Espirito Santo has been sacked as Nottingham Forest manager, and ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou looks to be taking his place as the club prepare for their campaign in Europe - but some fans in the NottinghamshireLive comments section say that he's the wrong man to address Forest's weaknesses on the field.

Nuno's time came to an end after a successful stint was marred by outspoken comments around transfers, and his relationship with figures in the club hierarchy like owner Evangelos Marinakis. Postecoglou is tipped to replace him, with an announcement due imminently after talks with Marinakis.

Postecoglou was sacked after his second season with Spurs, winning the Europa League and securing a Champions League spot, but having a torrid time in the Premier League. The London club's board ultimately decided that the trophy was not enough to make up for finishing 17th - still far from relegation points-wise, but nowhere near where a club with Spurs' resources should expect to be.

It would be a significant shift if Postecoglou tries to impose his expansive, risk-taking attacking football on the squad, after a year and a half of Nuno. There is also little time in training to get the players up to speed, with Arsenal looming on Saturday.

Some fans back the move despite the difficult circumstances. Reader Slobberknocker says: "His teams always played decent footie. Wrongly labelled as kamikaze, when in reality he had to deal with a lot of injuries at the back. Decent upgrade in my book."

Commenter ScarletHound writes: "We need to give him a chance, and always get behind the team. We weren’t sure about Coops and Nuno either, in the beginning."

Others are much more pessimistic. LondonReds says: "Can't believe they didn't give Nuno a chance to lead us in Europe. I think Postecoglou is the worst of the names. Hamstrings will be pinging left, right and centre. He doesn't develop players, which was Nuno's strength. Look at Maddison and Johnson. Gone backwards."

TelfordRed writes: "Well he always wins a trophy in his second season, I just wasn't banking on it being the Championship. Will get behind him if he's the man in the dugout, but more than a tad underwhelmed by this."

Nickknows says: "This season has already descended into farce. We've bought all the players Nuno needed, and we're in Europe. Now, we sack the manager and replace him with a coach who took Spurs to just above relegation? Seems like a step backwards. And this all seems to be part of the owner's ego. Are we going through the cycle of changing managers every season again? Stability is the key, NOT hiring and firing on a whim."

On our Facebook page, Whaddy Pink writes: "Not right. Don’t know how we’ve gone from a manager that took us to Europe with a squad that had no right to be there. Now we’re linked with a guy that finished 17th last season and it’s 4 days before we go to Arsenal?"

Shane Cave says: "Dreadful decision for a club that’s made great leaps forward, and we have a bad appointed manager decision."

Tom Faulkner adds: "If Postecoglou comes in, it will turn the squad upside down and there just isn't time to let all the new players and new manager settle in before we head to Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime. Who knows what to expect!?"
