Did selector Ajit Agarkar ask for an extension till 2027 World Cup? BCCI top-source refutes claim
by Madhav Agarwal · Inside Sport IndiaA new report has now refuted the claim, that chief selector Ajit Agarkar asked for an extension until 2027 World Cup.
A lot seems to be going on at the moment, in the BCCI. Of course, preparations for the IPL 2026 is one aspect, but on the other hand, the board has to look forward at the international calendar as well. On Thursday, a report emerged, that chief selector Ajit Agarkar has asked for an extension until the 2027 World Cup. But now, a fresh piece in PTI suggests, that that is not the reality.
Ajit Agarkar did not ask for an extension
A senior BCCI official has refuted this claim. “The selection panel is a sub-committee of the BCCI and the selectors’ contract runs till September this year,” a senior BCCI official privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“Ajit’s contract ends in September and after that BCCI secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he would continue till next year’s ODI World Cup. A senior selector can continue upto four years as per constitution and he doesn’t need to seek an extension,” he said.
The road ahead
The former India bowler, Agarkar took over the role in July 2023, and has been a central figure involved in Team India’s transition in Tests, and T20Is, where a host of senior players have retired. Apart from that, the entire selection panel is expected to watch one game per week, covering 5 in the entire week, for a team of 5.
This would be to keep an eye on the 20-odd core group of players, who are expected to perform for the team in the upcoming ICC events, and also the Asian Games, and the Olympics.
