Alternate Team India squad picked for T20 World Cup 2026, Shubman Gill snubbed again

Among the notable misses in the Indian squad was vice-captain Shubman Gill, who has been out of form ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has picked an alternate India cricket team squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 which begins in February 2026. Last week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the marquee tournament, with Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the team. Among the notable misses in the Indian squad was that of vice-captain Shubman Gill.

No Gill in alternate Team India squad for T20 WC

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra picked his alternate Team India squad comprising of the likes of Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul, Mohamed Siraj among others. However, the former Indian cricketer decided to leave out Gill from the side. Check out Chopra’s squad below:

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Jitesh Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul.

 While the Punjab batter fared well in ODIs in 2025, amassing 490 runs from 11 matches at an average of 49, his performance in T20Is has been quite poor. After returning to the T20I side in the Asia Cup and following sub-par performances in that tournament followed by the series against Australia and South Africa, he was subsequently snubbed from the side for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Gill returned to action in the IND vs SA T20I series after suffering a neck injury during the 1st Test in Kolkata. following which he was forced to miss the ODI series as well. In the three T20Is that he featured in, he managed to register knocks of 4, 0 and 28. He was ruled out of the 4th T20I due to a foot injury and was replaced by Sanju Samson in the 5th T20I.
