After snub from T20 World Cup squad, Shubman Gill resumes training in Mohali
by Madhav Agarwal · Inside Sport IndiaWhile Shubman Gill was left out of the squad, Ishan Kishan made his way back into the team for T20 World Cup.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, after being the VC in the IND vs SA T20I series, Shubman Gill was not picked in the T20 World Cup squad. He also picked up an injury in the last match of the series, raising questions, if all was well? But then, the talented batter has finally returned to practice.
Shubman Gill back to training
On Thursday, he resumed training at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. And his next assignment could be the IND vs NZ series that begins on January 11. It also remains to be seen if Shubman Gill will be part of the second round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Friday.
Meanwhile, as far as his T20I numbers are concerned, they weren’t the best, in the last 18 months or so. In the T20I series vs Australia, his highest score was 46, while the series vs South Africa, he could manage a best of 28. That meant, that his last fifty in the format came back in 2024, and this year averaged only 24.
Last year, he had shown glimpses that he could be a good player in T20Is as well. In 8 matches, he ended up scoring 266 runs at an average of 38 and a strike-rate of 133. As far as his exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad is concerned, selector Ajit Agarkar had said, that it had nothing to do with form.
“Some people are going to miss out on a particular format, because they are playing in another. Let’s not make much of it. Over the last few years, Gill has been the No.1 batter in the world. He knows what he has to do, he knows what’s needed and hopefully by the time the WC comes by, he’ll be back to being No.1,” Agarkar had said.
