Gary Lineker is set to step down as host of BBC Match of the Day at the end of the season.

The former England striker has presented the broadcaster's iconic Premier League highlights show since 1999 and is currently its highest paid star on £1.3m per year. He first took on the role replacing Desmond Lynam after transitioning into a media career following his retirement in 1994.

It had been reported that Lineker was set to leave after presenting coverage of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. But now the BBC report that he is to step down from the role after 25 years at the end of this season. They say more details and a formal announcement are set to follow tomorrow (Tuesday Nov 12), which may include information over who is to replace Lineker. Among the frontrunners are likely to be regular Match of the Day 2 host Mark Chapman or Gabby Logan who has been hosting the BBC's Champions League coverage.
