The JAG spinoff originally focused on Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon), but since then, the rotating cast, including Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, Pauley Perrette, the late David McCallum and Lauren Holly, has explored others’ personal lives. The underlying focus remains the same—solving military-related crimes of various levels of complexity with dark humor. The show has spawned six spinoffs, including NCIS: Origins premiering this fall and NCIS: Tony & Ziva coming next year.
In NCIS 22nd season premiere, Chief Medical Examiner Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) is still reeling following his breakup with Special Agent Jessica Knight (Katrina Law), who departed to become REACT chief training officer. Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) is back undercover, and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) is up for deputy director.

The season 22 premiere of NCIS airs Monday, October 14, on CBS at 8 p.m. Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill created the show. It has aired 467 episodes, which are available to stream on Paramount+.
How Many Episodes Will Be In NCIS Season 22 on CBS?
Most seasons of NCIS run 20 to 22 episodes. Season 21 only had 10 episodes, however, due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes that ate into production time for all scripted entertainment. This season will be back to the regular number of episodes.
Who Is The NCIS Season 22 Cast?
Through the years, the rotating cast has drawn a lot of attention to NCIS. Weatherly left after 13 seasons to star in Bull on CBS. De Pablo exited after eight seasons, while Harmon checked out in season 19. Perrette’s exit came amid drama, as she claimed she had been bitten by a dog and subject to other assaults on the set. McCallum, who passed away in 2023, was the longest-running original cast member on the show.

As for the season 22 cast, Dietzen, Murray and Rocky Carroll, who plays Leon Vance, have been on the program for years. Valderrama and Gary Cole are more recent additions to the drama.
What Is NCIS Season 22 About?
The procedural once focused more on crimes than the characters’ personal lives. But over the years, that has shifted a bit. While NCIS continues to focus on a crime of the week, it also delves into a lot of personal matters. In addition to Jimmy and Jessica’s breakup, this season will delve into why Parker apparently hallucinated (or perhaps remembered?) two kids on a ship and what that means. Nick will deal with his difficulty establishing long-term relationships. And Vance has to deal with a former girlfriend who reappears in his life.
