GFA appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, confirming a major decision in the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment, made by the GFA Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, ends weeks of speculation over who would take charge following the departure of Otto Addo.

Queiroz arrives with vast experience at the highest level of international football. The Portuguese tactician has managed several national teams and top clubs, including stints with Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Japan and Qatar.

His World Cup pedigree is expected to be a key factor in Ghana’s campaign. He led South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, guided Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.

The 73-year-old takes over at a crucial time, with the World Cup just weeks away. He is expected to begin work immediately as he looks to assess the squad, finalise his technical team and prepare the Black Stars for the global showpiece.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in their remaining Group fixtures.

The appointment signals Ghana’s intent to rely on experience and structure as they aim to compete strongly on the world stage.
