The Ghana Football Association has officially appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision, reached by the GFA’s Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, signals a bold move to rely on Queiroz’s vast international experience as Ghana prepares for football’s biggest stage to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Queiroz arrives with an impressive résumé, having managed elite sides including Real Madrid and served as assistant at Manchester United. On the international stage, he has coached Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Oman national football team, Japan national football team, and Qatar national football team.

His World Cup pedigree is equally noteworthy. He guided South Africa national football team to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions, earning global respect for his tactical discipline and defensive organization.

The GFA believes Queiroz’s experience and leadership will be crucial as Ghana seeks to make a strong impact at the mundial. He is expected to immediately begin preparations, assess the player pool, and shape a competitive squad capable of challenging top opposition.

Ghana will open their campaign on June 17, 2026, in Toronto against Panama national football team, before facing European heavyweights England national football team and Croatia national football team in what promises to be a demanding group.

With Queiroz now at the helm, expectations will be high among Ghanaian fans as the Black Stars aim to rediscover their competitive edge on the world stage.
