2025/26 Ghana Premier League: Week 12 Match Preview - Asante Kotoko vs Medeama

· GhanaSoccernet

Fresh from losing their unbeaten run, Asante Kotoko return to the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday to face Medeama as they look to respond positively after their midweek setback against Basake Holy Stars in their last outstanding Ghana Premier League fixture.

This will be Kotoko’s seventh match in November, a congested schedule that appears to have taken a toll. Fatigue showed in the latter stages on Wednesday, with Holy Stars striking late to claim a 2-1 victory. The result brought an end to Kotoko’s unbeaten streak and left the league without an undefeated side after eleven matchdays.

Despite the disappointment, coach Karim Zito remained measured, urging his players to quickly shift their focus to the Medeama encounter.

"Everybody wants to beat Kotoko. We didn’t play badly. We played good football, but putting the ball in the back of the net was once again the problem. This is football, we are playing at home on Sunday, the team that leads the table leads us by three points, so we are still chasing."

Kotoko will need a more resolute defensive display if they are to regain momentum. Their struggles at the back have been evident, having conceded in three straight home matches.

Medeama arrive with renewed confidence after a 4-1 win over Rospack FC in the MTN FA Cup, a result that sent them into the round of 32. That victory followed a goalless draw with Bechem United in the league. Head coach Ibrahim Tanko believes their cup performance offers a timely lift.

"If you score four goals in a game just before facing Asante Kotoko, it gives you confidence. We are going to prepare well for that match," he said.

In the league, Kotoko have played eleven matches, winning five, drawing five and losing one. They have scored twelve goals at an average of 1.09 per match and conceded six at 0.55 per match. Medeama, meanwhile, have six wins, four draws and one defeat from the same number of fixtures, scoring fifteen goals at a rate of 1.36 per match and conceding six at 0.55 per match.

The two sides have met six times since November 2022. Kotoko have three wins, Medeama one, while two matches have ended in draws. Their most recent encounter was on June 1, 2025, when Kotoko clinched a 3-2 win. Across those fixtures, Kotoko have scored seven goals and Medeama six, giving the Porcupine Warriors a slight edge in recent meetings.

Both teams enter Sunday’s tie with ambition, and with little separating their performances this season, another tight contest is expected at the Baba Yara Stadium.
