South Africa coach Hugo Broos admitted he expected more from his players as the Black Galaxies were narrowly defeated 1-0 in an international friendly on Tuesday.

Ghana’s team fought hard in the second half but could not find a breakthrough, while Sipho Mbule’s 57th-minute strike proved decisive for Bafana Bafana as they fine-tuned preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite the loss, Ghana created several clear chances and struck the woodwork twice, showing resilience against a South African side seeking sharpness ahead of AFCON.

Speaking after the match, Broos reflected on his team’s performance and the factors that may have influenced it.

“Maybe that's something that plays on the mind as well, that next week AFCON starts and that players are a little afraid of getting injured or whatever. But again, I expected a little more from my team today, a better game, but yes, that can happen,” he said.

The South African coach remained confident his squad will be ready for their opening AFCON match next Monday, emphasizing the importance of managing player fitness while maintaining competitive intensity in the lead-up to the tournament.

Ghana’s spirited showing, despite the defeat, will provide valuable lessons as the Black Galaxies continue their preparations for their CHAN qualifying campaign.
