Andre Ayew’s move to NAC Breda has renewed discussion around his international future, with the veteran forward aiming to put himself back in contention for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as his return remains uncertain.

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has not closed the door on Ayew, but the dynamics within the national team have changed since Addo began his second stint in February 2024. The 36-year-old has not been recalled during that period, while the captain’s armband has been passed to his younger brother, Jordan Ayew, signalling a clear shift in leadership and long-term planning.

Ayew remains one of Ghana’s most decorated internationals, with over 120 caps and 24 goals. He has represented the country at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three FIFA World Cups, bringing a level of tournament experience unmatched by most players in the current squad. That pedigree could still be relevant as Ghana prepare to face high-level opposition at the 2026 World Cup, where matches against England, Croatia, and Panama would demand composure, leadership, and game management on the biggest stage.

However, Ghana have increasingly leaned towards younger players as part of a broader rebuild, focusing on pace, energy, and long-term continuity. In that context, Ayew’s absence from recent squads suggests the technical team may be prioritising evolution over experience, even with the World Cup approaching.

Ayew’s return to top-flight European football is therefore significant. Regular minutes and strong performances in the Eredivisie could strengthen his case, whether as a starter or an experienced squad option. At the same time, Ghana may also decide to move forward without him, trusting a new core to carry the team through the tournament.

For now, the move to NAC Breda keeps Ayew in the conversation. His World Cup hopes will depend on form, fitness, and whether Otto Addo believes his experience can still add value to a Black Stars side preparing for one of football’s biggest tests.
