Ghana coach Otto Addo has shared his excitement over Derrick Kohn's decision to chose the Black Stars over Germany, the country of his birth.

The Hamburg-born wing-back switched nationalities in November 2025, and made his debut for the Black Stars in the 2-0 defeat to Japan in the Kirin Cup tournament.

Kohn has been invited for the friendlies against Austria and Germany in March's international window.

"We are happy that he has chosen Ghana," said Addo, as quoted by German news outlet Bild. "He participated in the two test matches in November and made a good impression. He has a very good chance of being at the World Cup," added the German-trained gaffer.

Addo believes Kohn's versatility will be of huge advantage for the Black Stars, as he could offer more in various positions on the left. At Union Berlin this season, the 27-year-old has featured prominently as a wing-back in manager Steffen Baumgart's system.

"We have many good wingers. But I never rule anything out. It depends on the opponent and the situation; we are flexible. You can also play with a left winger who is more defensively oriented," continued Addo.

The former Bayern Munich youth defender has been consistent for the capital-based club, making 25 league appearances in the ongoing campaign.

And, according to Otto Addo, it makes him a valuable option for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

"His development at Union Berlin is very good. Union has been relatively stable this season. I don't think they'll be involved in the relegation battle. That's also thanks to Derrick. Overall, it's been a good season and things are moving in the right direction," concluded the Black Stars coach.
