Carlos Queiroz has built one of the most extensive and global coaching careers in modern football, spanning more than three decades across clubs, national teams, and multiple continents.
He began his managerial journey with the Portugal U20 team from 1989 to 1991 before taking charge of the senior Portugal national team between 1991 and 1993. His early success in youth development quickly established him as a respected figure in coaching circles.
Queiroz then moved into club management with Sporting CP from 1993 to 1996, before briefly taking charge of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1996. His global coaching path continued in Japan with Nagoya Grampus Eight between 1996 and 1997, followed by a stint with the United Arab Emirates national team from 1998 to 1999.
Between 2000 and 2002, he led South Africa, guiding them to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His growing reputation earned him a move to Manchester United, where he served as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson during two separate spells (2002–2003 and 2004–2008), contributing to one of the most successful eras in the club’s history. In between, he also had a short spell as head coach of Real Madrid from 2003 to 2004.
Queiroz returned to Portugal as head coach from 2008 to 2010, leading the national team to the 2010 World Cup. He later took charge of Iran between 2011 and 2019, becoming the longest-serving coach in their history and guiding them to three consecutive World Cups (2014, 2018, and 2022).
