Netflix is heading back to feudal-era Japan. The streaming service has officially renewed Last Samurai Standingfor Season 2, following the series’ explosive debut and rapid rise as a global hit.

The Japanese period-action drama found an audience that loved it, and it cut straight through Netflix’s charts and left a serious mark on international viewers.

Set during the Meiji period in the late 19th century, Last Samurai Standing drops viewers into a brutal survival contest where 292 samurai converge at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple.

The prize is a staggering 100 billion yen, and the cost of entry is survival. At the center of the chaos is Shujiro Saga, portrayed by Okada Junichi, a warrior driven into the competition by desperation as he fights to save his sick wife and child. The setup is simple, but the execution is ruthless, blending historical drama with high-impact action that never lets up.

The show was awesome and audiences clearly connected with it. The series surged to No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list for non-English shows and cracked the Top 10 in 88 countries.

In Japan, it dominated the charts for four straight weeks, becoming one of the country’s biggest recent streaming releases. On top of that, the show made history as the first all-Japanese production nominated for Best Foreign Language Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Behind the scenes, Okada isn’t just carrying the show on screen. He also serves as producer and action choreographer, teaming up with director Fujii Michihito to deliver fight sequences that feel raw, physical, and grounded.

The cast includes some of Japan’s most recognizable talent, including Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Taichi Saotome, Yuya Endo, Yasushi Fuchikami, Jyo Kairi, Takayuki Yamada, Wataru Ichinose, Riho Yoshioka, Kazunari Ninomiya, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Hideaki Ito.

Okada shared his excitement about the renewal, saying: “I’m pleased to see that ‘Last Samurai Standing’ has reached global audiences and has been confirmed for a second season.

“I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team. We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed.”

Fujii added: “I’m very pleased and relieved that ‘Last Samurai Standing’ has been such a big hit outside Japan. I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season. There’s no doubt that Season 2 will be even bigger and better than the first.”

The series is adapted from Imamura Shogo’s Ikusagami novel series, which won the 166th Naoki Prize in 2021. Season 2 will continue under Fujii’s direction. With its foundation already set and expectations sky-high, the next chapter of Last Samurai Standing sounds ready to go even harder.

If Season 1 was any indication, Netflix has a seriously cool samurai saga on its hands, and Season 2 is sure to be another savage ride.
