Linda Cardellini Explains What Pulled Her Into CRYSTAL LAKE and Why Pamela Voorhees Was Too Good to Pass Up

For horror fans, Peacock’s upcoming Friday the 13thprequel series Crystal Lake has been a fascinating project to watch take shape. The road to production hit a few bumps along the way, but things seemed to click into place when Linda Cardellinisigned on to play Pamela Voorhees, the grieving mother whose actions set the entire franchise in motion.

With Crystal Lake set to premiere on October 15 and the first glimpses of the series beginning to surface, Cardellini is opening up about what made this particular horror project impossible to resist.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress explained that horror wasn’t a genre she explored much earlier in her career. These days, though, she’s finding herself increasingly drawn to it, especially because of the opportunities it can offer female performers.

Speaking about Crystal Lake, Cardellini said, “With Crystal Lake, A24, Peacock, and [creator] Brad Caleb Kane all came together, and they just had this concept for making this story about Pam Voorhees. And if you watch the original movie, it really operates like a whodunit.”

While Jason Voorhees has become the face of the franchise over the decades, he’s nowhere near the central figure in the original film that many people remember. Instead, the movie slowly builds toward the reveal that Pamela Voorhees is the one murdering the camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake.

The character only appears near the end of the film, but thanks to Betsy Palmer’s unforgettable performance, she became one of the most important figures in horror history.

Cardellini pointed out just how significant Pamela’s role is when viewed through the lens of the franchise as a whole.

“She leaves this impression on the entire franchise. There’s so many movies subsequent that you’d think Jason’s always been in that mask doing what he’s doing. But that wasn’t the case,” Cardellini said.

That legacy is part of what made the role so appealing. Cardellini saw an opportunity to step into territory she hadn’t explored before and dig into a character unlike any she’d previously played.

“It just seemed like something that I had never done. I haven’t seen that many female slashers like that. To dive into who she might have been, I thought, well, that’s something I’ve never done. When I’m looking for things to do next, I ask myself what’s something I haven’t done yet. And that was one of them.”

For Cardellini, the appeal wasn’t simply playing a horror icon. It was getting the chance to explore the woman behind the tragedy and uncover the events that pushed Pamela Voorhees down such a dark path.

As she put it, “They let her son drown! There’s fertile backstory there!” That gets right to the heart of why Crystal Lake feels like such an intriguing addition to the Friday the 13th universe.

Rather than focusing on Jason’s familiar reign of terror, the series appears ready to dig into the emotional wounds and devastating circumstances that shaped Pamela before audiences ever met her.

With A24, Peacock, and Brad Caleb Kane bringing this story to life, horror fans have plenty of reasons to be curious about what’s waiting at Camp Crystal Lake. Now all that’s left is for Peacock to drop a full trailer and give us a better look at what Cardellini has in store as one of horror’s most infamous mothers.

Negligent camp counselors might want to stay far away when Crystal Lake premieres on October 15.
