Ballon d’Or 2026: Why I don’t publicly tip myself to win award

Bayern Munich forward, Harry Kane has explained his reluctance to publicly assert his candidacy for the Ballon d’Or this year.

This is despite achieving a goal tally that approaches Lionel Messi’s record this year. The 33-year-old England captain is among 30 nominees for this esteemed accolade, which includes Messi himself.

During an interview with Marca, Kane disclosed that he has consistently maintained a modest demeanor throughout his career and refrains from self-promotion.

He acknowledged that last season with Bayern Munich was exceptional and that he takes considerable pride in his accomplishments, yet he declines to discuss the Ballon d’Or as it remains beyond his control.

He stated, “It’s complicated. I’ve never liked to talk too much about myself. All I’d say is that last season was incredible, both personally and as a team. It was, by far, the best season of my life. It’s true that reaching 73 goals, the second-highest tally in history [after Leo Messi’s 82 in 69 games in 2011-12], speaks for itself. I’m extremely proud of it. I can only thank my teammates and everyone who helped make it possible.

“But the Ballon d’Or isn’t in my hands. It depends on the people who vote… I know there’s going to be a lot of talk about the Ballon d’Or until October, because it’s a major award.”

Kane delivered an outstanding performance during his tenure at Bayern Munich, contributing to the club’s victories in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and Super Cup. The former Tottenham Hotspur player also demonstrated his prowess for England at the FIFA World Cup, netting six goals and providing one assist as the team secured third place.

Given his accomplishments, he stands as a principal contender for the award alongside Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Rodri, and Lamine Yamal. Throughout the 2025-26 season, he accumulated 73 goals across 65 matches for both club and country.
