One of the best Warhammer 40,000 games finally has a PS5 release date
by Jim Hargreaves · tsaWe often joke about just how many Warhammer 40,000 video games there are in circulation and not all of them are certified bangers. One that you should definitely be on your radar is Warhammer 40,000 Speed Freeks, which finally has a confirmed PS5 release date.
The game will launch on May 21st for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with a physical release due on July 16th (retail prices start at around £16.99).
Developed by Caged Element and published by Wired Productions – the same duo that brought us GRIP: Combat Racing – Speed Freeks eschews the stoic machismo of 40K’s Space Marines in favour of the unruly Orks. As those who play the GW tabletop game will know, the greenskins love themselves some Mad Max style motors, making them the no-brainer faction to champion a new game in the car combat genre.
Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks can be played solo against bots or online, featuring two core game modes. Deff Rally is a vehicular spin on the conventional headquarters or control point type game mode where two teams of Orks scramble to occupy a checkpoint on the map while also racing through gates to secure points.
Meanwhile, Kill Konvoy puts a twist on capture the flag. Here, two teams clash to secure bombs that they must then drop in their opponent’s endzone, which happens to be at the feet of a giant Ork Stompa as it advances across the battlefield.
In our Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks review, Dom scored the game an 8/10, saying “the spirit of Gorkamorka lives on in Speed Freeks, with a frantic blast of multiplayer mayhem the perfect antidote to the grim dark realities of other Games Workshop titles.”
Having played several hours of the game myself, it definitely fills that chasm left by the lack of modern car combat games. Where we were spoiled for choice leading into the late 90s, the subgenre seemingly died a death with few developers willing to risk taking a punt at a revival.
