If street vendors were found to be in possession of multiple vendor licences and identity cards, the GCC will revoke them, said Mayor R. Priya on Thursday (November 28, 202) at the Council meeting.

During zero hour, V. Rajan, chairperson of the Valasaravakkam Zone Ward Committee, raised concerns that multiple vendors from the same families were obtaining licences and identity cards being issued by the Greater Chennai Corporation. This led to instances of duplication, leaving many legitimate vendors without proper identification, he alleged.

Many councillors agreed with Mr. Rajan and suggested that verification using ration cards could be done as well and elected representatives should be part of the Vending Committee formed by the GCC under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act.

Ms. Priya, replying to the councillors, said licences and identity cards would be cancelled if such errors were detected.
