Viktor Gyokeres transfer latest as frontrunner 'emerges' in Man United and Man City £65m battle
by Mark Wakefield · Manchester Evening NewsManchester United and Manchester City are reportedly set to go head-to-head for the signing of Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres.
United have been heavily linked with signing Gyokeres ever since Ruben Amorim was confirmed as the club's new head coach. The Reds hired Amorim as Erik ten Hag's replacement in the Old Trafford dugout, after the 39-year-old spent four seasons at Sporting.
Gyokeres has been in fine form for Sporting this season, scoring 24 goals across 19 appearances in all competitions. The Sweden international also scored a hat-trick against City in the Champions League earlier this month.
According to the Sunday Mirror, both United and City are looking to sign Gyokeres in 2025. The report claims that the 26-year-old is a target for both clubs, with moves being planned for the summer transfer window at the end of the season.

It has been reported that Amorim wants to reunite with Gyokeres at United and has made the striker his priority target to strengthen the squad at the end of the season. Reports have speculated that Sporting would be willing to allow Gyokeres to leave the club next summer for a fee worth around £65million.
City are also mentioned in the report as having an interest, despite already having Erling Haaland as their first-choice striker. Hugo Viana will leave Sporting next summer to be City's new sporting director in a move the Citizens will hope gives them the upper hand in the race for his signature, and the Portuguese is reportedly determined to bring Gyokeres with him to the Etihad Stadium.
Despite the apparent interest from City, it has been reported that Gyokeres has reservations about the prospect of linking up with Pep Guardiola's squad. The report claims that the striker will only join City if he won't have to settle for a spot on the bench behind Haaland. And that could hand United a crucial advantage in what is sure to be one of the most highly sought-after transfers of the summer transfer window next year.
