Geovany Quenda transfer latest - Man United interest, contract stance, Ruben Amorim verdict

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United continue to be linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon star Geovany Quenda.

The January transfer window is fast approaching, but it remains to be seen what business United will conduct in the New Year. Rumours have been swirling for several months about the potential new signings that United could add to their squad for the second half of the season.

Quenda has been mentioned on the United transfer rumour mill for several weeks thanks to his performances at Sporting. New United head coach Ruben Amorim worked alongside the 17-year-old in Portugal before making the switch to Old Trafford.

Here, MEN Sport takes a look at the latest on United's interest in signing Sporting Lisbon star Geovany Quenda.

United stance on Geovany Quenda transfer

The Manchester Evening News understands that Sporting expect United to submit an offer to try and sign Quenda.

United have been monitoring Quenda's progress since turning their attention to the winger at the start of the season, even before Amorim's appointment as head coach.

It remains to be seen if and when United will make a bid to sign Quenda, but it's understood that the Reds are yet to submit a formal off for the 17-year-old as things stand.

Geovany Quenda contract and release clause

Quenda signed a new contract with Sporting in September that keeps him at the Jose Alvalade Stadium until 2027.

As part of the deal, Quenda now has a release clause in his contract worth €100million (£83.3million).

“Sporting CP are the club that are in my heart. It is always an honour to renew my contract with this great club and I will continue working hard,” Quenda told the Portuguese club's website after signing his new contract.

“I have always worked for this moment, but I never thought it would happen so quickly and now it is time to keep going. My teammates have always helped me. It is a fantastic group."

Ruben Amorim verdict

Amorim handed Quenda his opportunity in the first team this season just months before making the switch to Old Trafford.

The new United boss has previously explained why he holds Quenda in such high regard after starring in a 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao during pre-season back in August.

"He's [Quenda] very talented, very mature and understands the game like an adult," Amorim told Sporting TV. "He obviously has a lot to grow into, but I think he played an excellent game and we have a player there."
