Man United owe staggering £413m in player transfer payments as financial details released

Manchester United have spent a lot on transfers over the last couple of years - and that has reflected in how much the club owe in instalments for player purchases.

United's transfer outlay exceeds over £1billion across the last six seasons, with Antony their most expensive signing across that period. In total, eight players have cost more than £50m each and United are starting to pay the price for spending without much success to come from it.

In fact, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire, United owe £413m in instalments for player transfers as viewed by their detailed accounts from the 2023/24 season. As well as this, the cost of United's squad has gone above the £1bn mark and total borrowings has hit £714m.

It doesn't look at all rosy on the financial front for United, who saw Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchase a 27.7 per cent stake in the club earlier this year, but they are owed a substantial bit of cash from others for player sales. They are due £94m from clubs after selling players over the years.

Elsewhere, United are preparing for their first home game under the stewardship of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese is set to take charge of his maiden Old Trafford outing on Thursday as they host Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. United have won just one of their opening four matches in the competition so far.

Speaking ahead of the game, Amorim said: "Everybody has said to me it will be a special time [managing at Old Trafford for the first time]. I just want to win the game to give that happiness to the supporters. Before the match, it will be a new sensation but after the whistle it will be one more game and we want to win that match."

Amorim's United were held to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich in his first game at the helm on Sunday. Marcus Rashford put United ahead inside the first two minutes, but they were pegged back when Omari Hutchinson equalised late on.
