England squad named as Thomas Tuchel hands out recalls ahead of World Cup
Thomas Tuchel has named his England squad for the matches against Uruguay and Japan in March as the team's preparations ramp up ahead of their World Cup opener
by Samuel Meade · The MirrorEngland have named an extended 35-man squad for matches with Japan and Uruguay later this month with Leeds frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin back in the fold following his impressive season.
Thomas Tuchel is running out of matches with the World Cup just around the corner, but the German has put together a stellar qualifying campaign with the ex-Chelsea boss now just fine tuning his squad.
England will host the South American nation at Wembley on March 27 before welcoming Japan to their London home four days later. The former is likely to provide a sterner test with the team's next outings coming in June, just days before their World Cup opener against Croatia.
The Three Lions have won their last six games on the bounce without conceding with Tuchel showing loyalty to the players who have excelled during the qualifying campaign.
Calvert-Lewin, who was once seen as Harry Kane's back-up, has returned to form this year at Elland Road after several injury-hit years. Everton's James Garner is another new face in the squad with his form rewarded.
Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are both included. The pair, at different ends of their international career, have benefited from the upturn in form experienced by the Red Devils. Mainoo can make first England appearance since September 2024 whilst Maguire has a wealth of experience having been a favourite during the Gareth Southgate-era.
Lewi Hall's stellar showings with Newcastle, where he has looked like the best English left-back in recent weeks, haven't gone unnoticed by Tuchel, who has included him in the group.
The German has also opted to name five goalkeepers with Manchester City's James Trafford, who has been starved on minutes this season, still included alongside the likes of Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson.
Dominic Solanke serves as one of three out and out No 9s alongside Kane and Calvert-Lewin. Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins misses out.
In midfield regular faces Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Declan Rice and Adam Wharton are named alongside Garner. Despite the fanfare surround him becoming the youngest ever scorer in the Premier League, there is no place for Arsenal's teenage sensation Max Dowman.
