Man Utd's Viktor Gyokeres transfer alternative already warned off January move

Manchester United have long been linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres and despite a perfect alternative being available, he has already been warned off a move

Manchester United have already been told to ditch a move for Evan Ferguson, while he has also been issued a warning by a former Red Devils flop.

The Old Trafford club are on the hunt for a new forward in January, with their scoring statistics not making for happy reading so far this season. Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres is among those linked with a move to Manchester.

That move would see him reunited with former boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. But an ideal alternative has emerged over recent days in the form of Evan Ferguson.

It has been suggested that his current side Brighton are open to loaning him out in January after limited opportunities so far this term. The Red Devils have regularly been linked with the Irish forward, with rumours as recently as the summer claiming that they were weighing up a £50m offer.

But United chiefs have already been warned away from a fresh swoop by ex-striker Teddy Sheringham. Speaking earlier this year, he said: “Is he the kind of signing that Manchester United need to make? I don’t think that he is.

“I don’t think United should be looking to add him to the squad. He’s 19 and has great potential. United have already signed a similar player in Rasmus Højlund who is a couple of years older, so he’s not a player that I think the club should be looking to acquire at this moment in time.

"He’s too young. He’s too inexperienced. Manchester United don't need any more inexperienced, inconsistent players this season. If they are going to add a forward, it should be someone with a proven track record who can come in and hit the ground running.”

Should United pursue a move for Ferguson, he would not be the first striker to pen a January loan deal. The Red Devils have also signed Odion Ighalo and Wout Weghorst in the winter window.

The Dutchman joined midway through the 2022/23 season but scored just two goals in 31 outings in all competitions. And he has already spoken out on the problems Ferguson could potentially face in sealing a January switch.

Speaking last year, the now Ajax striker said: "There was zero adjustment time. The pressure was bizarre and the physical strain greater than I had ever experienced.

"Only in the last few months did I feel I was really comfortable in it. Then I became myself and dared to throw off the shyness. In the period before that, maybe I was too humble.”

Ferguson, 20, has made 73 appearances in all for Brighton, scoring 17 goals - but only one of which has come this season. His contract at the Amex Stadium is set to run until the summer of 2029.
