Arsenal set new Champions League record in amazing victory over PSV

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal made light work of PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night to all but seal their place in the Champions League quarter-finals at the midway point of their last 16 clash

From a team which had forgotten how to score, suddenly they could not stop.

What an incredible turnaround for Arsenal as they blitzed PSV Eindhoven to as good as book their place in the Champions League quarter finals. They scored seven yes, seven - and did not even have a fit centre forward.

Jurrien Timber, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard (twice), Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori were all on target and, having to failed to score in their previous two Premier League games, they enjoyed a record away win in this competition.

Nwaneri, at 17 years and 348 days the second youngest Arsenal player to play in a Champions League knock-out game, was just incredible in an enthralling victory.

This kid is something truly special. Nwaneri glided across the pitch all night, scored and showed he already belongs on Europe’s biggest stage. Odegaard was brilliant as he answered a few critics. The whole team was magnificent.

Arsenal were too good, too strong and humiliated PSV. Europe is Mikel Arteta’s last chance of silverware this season and they looked determined to seize the initiative.

It was Timber who had talked before the game about changing the narrative. Arteta spoke about finding extra gears in this competition. And Arsenal did both of those things.

The Premier League title has all but gone but Arsenal delivered a much-needed and timely reminder of their quality. And playing like this, they will feel they can win it.

You could tell this was a different Arsenal performance straight away. After looking short of ideas when they failed to score against West Ham and Nottingham Forest, they pushed forward with real menace and intent.

The night actually started with a huge let-off for Arsenal. Keeper David Raya pushed Ivan Perisic’s cross out to Ismael Saibari who smashed the ball against the bar. Ryan Flamingo missed from the follow-up.

Arsenal then took full advantage - and never looked back. The opening goal came after 18 minutes. Rice produced a sensational piece of skill in the box as he dummied, turned and then put over a left foot cross which was headed home by Timber.

It released the pressure valve and suddenly Arsenal were transformed. They got a second three minute later. Myles Lewis-Skelly did some fine work, pulled a ball back for Nwaneri who fired home at the near post.

It released the pressure valve and suddenly Arsenal were transformed. They got a second three minute later. Myles Lewis-Skelly did some fine work, pulled a ball back for Nwaneri who fired home at the near post.

Lewis-Skelly then got very lucky. He got booked for a clumsy foul and, just a couple of minutes later, tripped PSV’s Richard Ledezma and it should have been a second yellow card. But referee Manzano let him off and he was replaced by Calafiori soon after.

Arsenal then got a third after 31 minutes. There was a horrible mix-up in the PSV box. Flamingo failed to clear, Merino seized the chance and fired into the bottom far corner. It stood after a lengthy VAR check for offside.

PSV gave themselves brief hope after Thomas Partey made a clumsy challenge at a corner, caught Luuk de Jong and conceded a penalty. PSV forward Noa Lang smashed it home.

But Arsenal reasserted themselves at the start of the second half. Nwaneri tricked his way down the right, his cross was only palmed out by PSV keeper Walter Benitez and there was Odegaard to smash home.

It quickly got even better. Leandro Trossard linked up brilliantly with Calafiori down the left, Calafiori returned a pass to Trossard who then fired past Benitez for a fifth goal.

Odegaard made it even better. He made a run from midfield, unleashed a shot from the edge of the box and it squirmed through the keeper’s hands. PSV fans started leaving en masse.

There was still time for Calafiori to get a seventh as he raced onto Odegaard’s through ball and striker home.

Arsenal fans enjoyed their night and celebrated with chants of “Who put the ball in the PSV net? Half our f***ing team did.” It was an unforgettable night.
