Arsenal set for Viktor Gyokeres meeting after Mikel Arteta delivers verdict on transfer target

by · football.london

Arsenal will finally get a proper first-hand look at one of the players most heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in the last transfer window on Tuesday night.

Viktor Gyokeres is a man in hot form and he will be hoping to showcase his talents to one of his main interested parties as Sporting CP take on Arsenal in the Champions League. The Portuguese side are currently second in the new league phase, only behind Liverpool at the halfway stage.

Gyokeres was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer, with Arsenal among a host of teams linked with signing him. His £86million price tag put the Gunners, and other suitors off, however.

It was no surprise to see Arsenal linked with the frontman, having registered an astonishing 43 goals and 15 assists 50 appearances for the Portuguese outfit in his first season.

Could he do it in the big leagues and the big competitions was the question that was aimed at him, and he has proved that he can, at least in the Champions League, this year.

Gyokeres has another 24 goals and four assists in 19 appearances for Sporting this season, with five of those goals coming in four Champions League matches. He bagged a hat-trick against Manchester City last time out, proving he can do the business against the best.

Now Arsenal are set for their own meeting with the Swede. Mikel Arteta was asked about the striker in his pre-match press conference, but was coy with his answer.

When asked if Gyokeres was exactly what the modern day No.9 should be, Arteta responded: "I understand the question but they have a lot of individual qualities. That’s why they can win games in various ways. And yes in the specific position they have great players."

There are reports that Sporting will lower the release clause in the summer of 2025 to sell Gyokeres, with the Portuguese club looking for a fee in the region of £62million to £70million instead.

Whatever happens on Tuesday night, Gyokeres will once again be a man in demand, probably in January, as well as next summer and Arsenal will see just what they could be getting in their meeting on Tuesday.
