Arsenal confirm nightmare Gabriel Jesus injury outcome amid Mikel Arteta blow
by Josh Holland, Kieran Horn · football.londonArsenal have confirmed that Gabriel Jesus has suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee and will be out for the foreseeable future.
The Brazilian was forced off in the 39th minute in Sunday's FA Cup third round defeat to Manchester United. Jesus was caught holding his knee before staying down after a challenge on Bruno Fernandes.
After the game, Mikel Arteta confirmed the 27-year-old's injury was a worry. "Big worry, that's my feeling," he told reporters. "He had to come off on a stretcher with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It's not looking good.
On Tuesday morning, reports emerged suggesting the worst-case outcome for Arsenal with Jesus rupturing his ACL. Arteta refused to confirm or deny the severity of the extent on the injury in his pre-Tottenham press conference, but that has now been revealed.
A club statement read: "Further to being substituted during our match with Manchester United on Sunday, Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, scans and specialist reviews which have confirmed that he has sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
"Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme.
"We will continue to keep everyone updated with Gabby’s recovery, with everyone at the club fully focused on supporting Gabby to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible." Jesus has now suffered a second serious knee injury since joining Arsenal and is unlikely to feature again until later this tear.
