Ange Postecoglou could consider five Tottenham changes vs Arsenal as midfield decision looms
by Rob Guest · football.londonTottenham will be looking to earn the North London Derby bragging rights for the first time since May 2022 when they take on Arsenal on Wednesday evening. Mikel Arteta's side have had the upper hand in the last eight meetings between the sides, notably winning six times since March 2021.
Spurs really do need to put things right in the North London Derby, with this week's clash at the Emirates Stadium the perfect time to get back on track in the Premier League and also inflict more misery on Arsenal after their nightmare week in the capital. Ange Postecoglou's men certainly cannot afford to lose for an 11th time in the Premier League this season as they currently sit 12th and four points adrift of Brighton & Hove Albion in 10th.
So what changes could Postecoglou possibly make to the Spurs team that beat Tamworth 3-0 on Sunday? football.london takes a look below.
Djed Spence for Sergio Reguilon
Djed Spence was given a well-earned rest at Tamworth on Sunday but he was required from the substitutes' bench in extra time. Operating at centre-back after Radu Dragusin made way, the 24-year-old will likely return to left-back at the Emirates Stadium in place of Sergio Reguilon.
The former England Under-21s international has played a lot of football of late so hopefully he will be relatively fresh for the Arsenal game after getting 90 minutes on the bench at The Lamb Ground.
Lucas Bergvall for James Maddison/Pape Matar Sarr
Lucas Bergvall was another player Postecoglou turned to at Tamworth with the team at risk of a possible cup upset. The Swede once again impressed in his playing time and had an influence in Tottenham's forward play as they looked to make the breakthrough.
Outstanding in last week's win over Liverpool and in the previous game against Newcastle, Bergvall may well return to the starting XI as he's really making a case for a regular spot in the team right now. One of James Maddison or Pape Matar Sarr could be at risk going into the Arsenal fixture, with Yves Bissouma perhaps the only midfielder guaranteed a start after two impressive showings.
Dejan Kulusevski for Brennan Johnson
Dejan Kulusevski made his mark off the bench at Tamworth with Tottenham's second goal of the contest to deliver a hammer blow to the National League side. The Swede is a guaranteed starter in Postecoglou's XI and he's a certainty to come back in.
Another start in the front three looks to be on the cards and that will possibly come at the expense of Brennan Johnson.
Dominic Solanke for Timo Werner
Postecoglou unfortunately couldn't rest Dominic Solanke for the whole match at Tamworth due to Tottenham's struggles up front. The striker did get a bit of a breather, though, meaning he should be raring to go at the Emirates Stadium.
Solanke will come into the Tottenham team in place of Timo Werner, who is set to miss out altogether due to a hamstring injury sustained in the Tamworth game.
Son Heung-min for Mikey Moore
Tottenham received a huge boost on Sunday with Mikey Moore playing his first game in just over two months following a spell on the sidelines through illness. The 17-year-old looks on course to be replaced in the team by Son Heung-min but he can be a huge asset off the bench for Postecoglou and Spurs in the closing stages.
Tottenham's attacking options on the bench are certainly improving and could possibly prove key in the second North London Derby of the season.
