How Overwatch's Doctrine went from mild-mannered scientist to stylish vampire

Speaking with members of the press, Blizzard's Team 4 discussed some behind-the-scenes stories on Overwatch's next hero.

Overwatch had a good day on Saturday with its big BlizzCon reveal. In terms of the ongoing story, fans learned that Doomfist's demise had been greatly exaggerated, as he turned up alive and well alongside the game's newest playable character: Doctrine. Doctrine, Overwatch's latest Support hero, brings an intriguing look and an interesting kit to the table, looking like a modern vampire and having the moves to match. It was a look that Blizzard's Team 4 wasn't quite expecting, but wound up running with, as I found out during a behind-closed-doors press interview on Saturday afternoon.

"We needed a person who felt Doomfist could potentially reach out to help him with his arm," Overwatch Art Director Dion Rogers explained. "And so we started off with kind of like a scientist or mechanical engineer-type vibe... but as we looked at the character, it didn't quite have the spark just yet. I mean, is that the guy who will repair Doomfist's arm or someone he will go to great lengths to rescue? And Miranda [Moyer], our lead narrative designer, she mentioned, 'I wonder what a vampire would look like in the Overwatch universe?' And a lot of times we don't put what we consider a high fantasy-type character in the game world, but this time, we thought, 'Hey, let's give it a try.' Let's see if we can achieve some sort of lifesteal-type character and layer it with this kind of vampire motif."

After taking Doctrine's initial scientist design and putting more of a vampire spin on it, the character's visual style gradually began to come together. Rogers added that the vampire aesthetics and motifs started to pile on a little more and the team came to agree that it was an overall positive direction for the character.

Senior Animator Kyle Disanjh added that the vampire aesthetic was also injected into Doctrine's animations, taking him from a straightforward scientist character to something wholly unique, especially with his drones acting more like makeshift bats. Doctrine's abilities, like his Shrouded Momentum move and its upright stance, were made to look more vampiric, leaning into his newfound style. Disanjh even noted that his sleep animation was given some added vampire flavor, something players will notice if they're on the wrong end of an Ana Sleep Dart or the like.

Beyond his unique look, there's much more to learn about Doctrine, including his abilities that give his teammates a substantial speed boost on the battlefield. Blizzard held a special Doctrine Deep Dive panel during the first day of BlizzCon 2026 going into more detail on what players can expect. Doctrine is set to join the roster as Overwatch's 54th Hero in October.
