KUCHING (Dec 21): In a display of national pride and anticipation, several iconic landmarks in Kuching are now bathed in the colours of the Malaysian flag, Jalur Gemilang.

This illumination celebrated Malaysia’s formal receipt of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) Federation flag during the closing ceremony of the Thailand SEA Games 2025 on Saturday, and marks the beginning of the countdown to the SEA Games 2027, which the nation is set to host.

The lighting initiative, led by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), features structures including the DBKU City Hall building at Bukit Siol, the Satok Bridge, Darul Hana Bridge, the Musical Fountain, and several other iconic structures around the city.

The display will remain for a week, extending into the New Year 2026, symbolising sustained public support for the upcoming Games.

Kuching North Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman said that this move underscores Kuching’s commitment and readiness as the host city for the opening ceremony.

“This effort is expected to enhance the visibility of the Games at the national level, ignite the sporting spirit among the people, and foster a sense of pride in Sarawak’s role as a co-host of this prestigious event,” he said.

He added that this initiative meant to strengthen unity and sportsmanship, reinforcing Kuching’s image as a competitive, progressive city that is prepared to host the SEA Games 2027.

Hilmy noted that the lighting display aligns with the call from the Sarawak government and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MYSED) to ensure the event’s success while nurturing patriotism and broad societal support.

Joining Kuching in this show of solidarity, other major cities including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang have also illuminated their iconic buildings in the national colours.
