MIRI (Nov 23): The Sarawak Transport Ministry is looking to expand the Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) to other divisions to reach more students and communities in the state, said its minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

The STG, which was previously held in 2015, was reintroduced in Miri this year and the ministry has provided funding to improve traffic gardens in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

“Road safety is a shared priority, and the STG exemplifies our proactive approach in equipping the younger generation with vital road safety knowledge and skills. This initiative is not just a competition — it is a platform for learning and a catalyst for community awareness.

“By leveraging the features of Miri’s traffic garden, it can provide an interactive experience for students during the traffic games. As we expand this initiative to other divisions next year, we aim to reach out to more students, ensuring the message of road safety resonates across Sarawak,” said Lee in his opening remarks at the launch of STG at Bulatan Traffic Garden here today.

Lee took the opportunity to thank Sarawak Shell Berhad for generously making a one-off donation for the STG comprising six units of pedal cars that were previously utilised in the Shell Traffic Games.

“These pedal cars will be a valuable addition to our road safety education efforts, especially in engaging our younger participants in a fun and educational way,” he added.

Lee also thanked the Miri Resident Office, Miri City Council, representatives from the Road Transport Department, police, Public Works Department, Miri District Education Office, the Department of Agriculture, the Broadcasting Department, the Information Department, Malaysia Civil Defence Department and Sarawak Public Communications Unit as well as teachers and students from various secondary and primary schools in Miri.

In the primary school-level Team category, SK Jalan Bintang won as champion, followed by SJKC North, SJKC Chung Hua Miri, SK South and SK Miri in second to fifth place respectively.
