Has Monster been renewed for Season 5?

The fourth season of Monster, the anthology series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan that dramatizes and explores the psyche of real serial killers in history and how they inspire each other. The most recent season took on the mini-franchise’s first female serial killer. Now that Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is on Netflix, what’s next? Here’s what we know about the future of Monster and a potential Season 5.

No... and the Lizzie Borden season was announced before Season 3 dropped. That’s a little concerning. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from following the Murphyverse, it’s that you never really know what to expect and can’t count on things to happen at a normal or expected pace. Not to use a cliché and say, “if he wanted to, he would,” but... that kind of is how it feels!

What (who) would Monster Season 5 be about?

It doesn’t bode well for the world that there are enough options to keep this show going for decades, you know? Probably longer. “God, there’s so many,” showrunner Ian Brennan said to People. “We’ve talked about BTK (Dennis Rader). [He] is a fascinating one… Ted Bundy, Green River Killer… We’ve toyed with Luigi Mangione, who is fascinating.”

Those options are all men, which is kind of a bummer. What if Sarah Paulson’s Aileen Wuournos got her own season? What about other female serial killers?

Brennan also said that choosing a subject isn’t as easy as it sounds. “It’s all tricky because most murderers just aren’t that interesting. It’s horrific, and you don’t want to watch it,” he told People. Never thought about it like that!

When do we (maybe) get to see Monster Season 5?

Alright, let’s look at the numbers. All previous seasons have premiered in September or October, a.k.a. spooky season, on Netflix. Season 1 dropped in 2022, Season 2 in 2024, Season 3 in 2025, and Season 4 in 2026. That’s actually pretty encouraging that, if and when Season 5 is announced, we get to watch it in September of 2027.
