Myles Garrett breaks NFL sack record — with minutes to spare

· New York Post

Myles Garrett is the NFL’s new sack king.

He recorded his 23rd sack during the fourth quarter of the Browns’ clash against Bengals in Cincinnati on Sunday, breaking Michael Strahan’s and T.J. Watt’s shared record for most in a single season.

Garrett sacked Joe Burrow with just over five minutes remaining.

Strahan, the Giants legend, set the record with 22.5 sacks in 2001.

Watt, the current Steelers star, tied that record in 2021.

Strahan did it in 16 games, while Watt did it in 15 games (though the NFL had already moved to a 17-game season).

Garrett has not missed a game this season, so Sunday was his 17th game.

His record-breaking season was bolstered by a five-sack outburst in a loss to the Patriots on Oct. 26.

He also recorded four sacks in a loss to the Ravens on Nov. 16 and three in a win over the Raiders on Nov. 23.

The No. 1 pick in the 2017, Garrett was been one of the NFL’s premier pass-rushers pretty much since he entered the league.

He has been named to the All-Pro First Team four times and the Second Team twice.

He was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 and is a near shoo-in to win the award again this year.

His previous single-season high was 16 sacks, which he did twice in 2021 and ’22.

This year, he also entered Sunday with 32 tackles-for-loss — the most in the NFL.

He signed a four-year, $160 million extension this past offseason after a contract standoff with the Browns.
