Zach Ertz returning to Eagles after Dallas Goedert injury

A familiar face is returning to Philadelphia. 

Free agent tight end Zach Ertz is signing a deal with the Eagles to return to the organization he played for from 2013-2021, according to multiple reports. Ertz will sign with the practice squad and then eventually move to the 53-man roster. 

NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that Ertz is expected to move up to the 53-man roster and play in the Eagles’ “Monday Night Football” showdown with the Bears this upcoming week. 

Ertz’s Philly reunion, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, comes as the Eagles deal with an injury to Dallas Goedert. 

Goedert sprained his MCL and is expected to miss a few weeks, according to multiple reports. 

The Eagles tight end left Philadelphia’s 24-20 win over the Titans in the second quarter after he was targeted twice and had a single catch for four yards in the game. 

Ertz spent the past two years with the Commanders, but had his 2025 season cut short when he tore the ACL in his right knee during a Dec. 7 game against the Vikings. 

The 35-year-old returns to the City of Brotherly Love 11 catches shy of breaking the Eagles franchise all-time catch record of 589, held by former wide receiver and Pro Football Hall of Famer Harold Carmichael. 

Ertz had plenty of success during his parts of nine seasons with the Eagles, which included a Super Bowl title in 2017 and three Pro Bowl nods from 2017-2019. 

The Eagles selected Ertz in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft and he remained with the franchise until he was traded to the Cardinals in the middle of the 2021 season. 

He played two-and-a-half seasons in Arizona and signed with the Commanders in 2024.
