Fiery Anthony Volpe hits back at rumors of Yankees position switch drama

Anthony Volpe is striking down any notion that he is unwilling to play a different position.

Speaking with reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Yakees game in Tampa, Volpe said that the organization had not broached the subject of playing a different position until Jose Caballero had been coming off the injured list, and said he’d “literally do anything to help the team win.”

Volpe was passionate in his defense after a rumor emerged that he did not want to change positions when the Yakees had approached him about a possible move to second base.

“When I was getting optioned, I told Boonie I’d play catcher. I’d do literally whatever the team needed, and that’s the truth,” he said to reporters, according to The Athletic.

He also said that he had been caught off guard by the story of his alleged refusal to change positions.

Since Volpe was a Gold Glove winner in his rookie season in 2023, his defense has taken a dip and had led the American League in errors last season.

The young shortstop has had an up-and-down 2026 season, which included being sent to the minors while coming back from shoulder surgery.

He was slated to play shortstop on Wednesday when the Yankees and Rays played the third game of a four-game set in Tampa.
