How much is Mike Tyson earning for Jake Paul fight? Prize money in full
by John Jones · Wales OnlineThe most highly-anticipated fight of the year is almost here, with Mike Tyson returning to the ring for his first official bout in nearly 20 years as he takes on YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
The heavyweight fight will see the 27-year-old influencer go head-to-head with the boxing great, who is 31 years his senior, over eight rounds in Arlington, Texas. The bout had been due to go ahead in July, but was postponed after Tyson fell ill on a flight due to an ulcer flare-up.
Paul has made ripples in the boxing world after making his professional debut in 2020. He has since defeated YouTubers, former basketball players and MMA fighters as well as professional boxers Andre August and Ryan Bourland in the ring, with his first loss coming at the hands of Love Island star Tommy Fury in a huge fight in Saudi Arabia last year.
Tyson, however, needs little introduction to boxing fans as he is regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, winning 50 of his 58 professional fights, with 44 of those by knockout. Known for his ferocious boxing style, he dominated the division for years and gained a fearsome reputation that still stands today even decades after his retirement.
The 58-year-old has revealed he has been 'begged' not to take part in the fight but remains focused on proving himself against a much younger opponent to show he still has what it takes. Of course, he will be rewarded handsomely with both men set to boost their bank balances significantly as a result of the fight. Here's everything you need to know.
How much is Mike Tyson getting paid for the fight?
The exact details of each fighter's contract have not been disclosed, but Tyson has downplayed the amount of money he is set to receive from fighting Paul.
"This fight is not going to change my life financially," he told SPORTBible. "If I did it for free, it's not going to change my life. My wife is constantly telling me, you do not need to do this fight. This is what I want to do, this is me. I'm seeking my glory."
That said, Tyson is still reportedly set to earn around $20 million (£15.5m) from the fight.
Some sources claim the purse will be split 50:50 between the two men, but Paul has boasted that he is set to make double what his opponent is getting, claiming he will go home with $40 million (£31 million) for fighting the boxing legend.
Earlier this year, the YouTuber-turned-boxer said: "I didn't bring [Tyson] to do s***; I'm here to make $40million and knock out a legend. I don't give a f*** about anything else, he's the one who wanted it to be a pro fight and he's going to get his a** knocked out for real.
"You're going to see on his record; Jake Paul KOs Mike Tyson; I'm not here to do s**t except make a bag… Every time fighters sit across from me and it's 'YouTuber this and Disney kid that' and they end up on the canvas… this is going to be no different.'
Paul has also disclosed that his contract includes "bonuses" that could inflate both his and Tyson's take-home pay.
"There are definitely certain guaranteed figures and other certain built-in bonuses and stuff on top of sales key performance indicators that trigger certain things," he explained. "This is definitely my biggest payday, of all the fights for sure. It is definitely a healthy payday."
What is Mike Tyson's net worth?
Tyson is thought to have earned over $300 million (£234 million) during his boxing career, with Forbes claiming his earnings could have even been an astonishing half a billion pounds or even more.
However, he managed to blow all of that enormous fortune, with lavish parties, huge mansions and expensive cars seeing him burn through the huge amount of money he had made. To sum it up, he famously bought his ex-wife a solid gold bathtub that set him back £1.75 million, while he also spent over £100,000 to buy two pet tigers.
However, after filing for bankruptcy back in 2003, he is thought to have slowly built his net worth back up to around £10 million, partly through running a successful cannabis company and podcast series.
Meanwhile, his opponent Paul is estimated to have a net worth of around $80 million (£62 million), most of which has come through his years as a popular YouTuber and influencer.
He has also launched his own media company, venture capital fund and men's skin care brand, while, as a boxer, he took home more than £6 million for fighting former Love Island star Tommy Fury last year.
