More than 6,000 people have taken part in a weekend of activities in Cardiff's Bute Park to raise funds for cancer research and treatment.

The fun began on Saturday at the Pretty Muddy events, which included a 5k mud-splattered obstacle course for children and adults who each had to navigate a scramble net, tunnels, a climbing frame, space hoppers, and a giant inflatable slide into a mud pit as a finale.

On Sunday thousands participated in the Race for Life events where people of all ages and abilities took part in 3k, 5k, and 10k events at Bute Park. The events are non-competitive so participants could choose if they walked, jogged, or ran the course.

Participants have raised £341,227 for Cancer Research UK so far with the figure expected to have grown further over the weekend.

Lisa Adams, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman in Wales, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life Cardiff.

“Sadly nearly one in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime but all of us can support the research that will beat it. We’re proud that Race for Life has had such a positive impact. Every pound raised supports our life-saving work, which has helped double cancer survival in the UK over the last 50 years.

“Race for Life powers progress and it relies on a whole community of people coming together, united by a common purpose to beat cancer.

“It was a special weekend at Race for Life Cardiff as people came together to celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived cancer and to remember loved ones lost to the disease.

“Now we’re asking everyone who took part to return the money they’re raised as soon as possible. Every donation, every pound raised, will make a real difference and help people live longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer.”

Further Race for Life events are planned across Wales this spring and summer including in Swansea, Llanelli, and Aberystwyth.
