Liverpool will soon discover the extent of damage done to Alexander Isak done during Saturday's 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur. The striker was forced off injured immediately after opening the scoring in north London with the Reds fearing the worst.

Isak scored just his second Premier League goal since his £125m summer deadline day transfer when he was clattered by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. The Liverpool striker required instant treatment and help from medical staff in making his way off the field.

Scans on Monday are set to determine the exact damage dealt from the reckless challenge, with club fearful their No.9 is in line for a lengthy lay-off, but hopeful he has avoided a knee issue.

Just how did a joyous moment opening the scoring quickly turn into despair for Isak and Liverpool? The ECHO examines the evidence...

  1. He shoots, he scores

Isak was fed through into the Spurs penalty area by Florian Wirtz. The striker finished off the sweeping counterattack with a left-footed strike across goal and into the back of Guglielmo Vicario's net. In his desperation, Van de Ven was already committed to making his challenge.

  2. Van de Ven moves in

Knowing he would be too late to prevent Isak's shot, Van de Ven's intention appears to be to block the effort. The Spurs man's outstretched right leg moves to create a barrier between the Reds No.9 and the goal, whilst his trailing left leg brushes along the turf with the knee on course to make contact with Isak's shooting foot.

  3. Contact made

Van de Ven traps Isak's left leg in a scissor motion. The Dutchman's trailing leg makes contact above the knee with the back of the Liverpool goalscorer's lower leg, whilst his outstretched right leg hooks around the front of Isak's ankle. Isak's foot was not planted on the turf when the contact occurred...

  4. The moment of danger

However, the force and direction of the challenge twists Isak's left foot unnaturally to the left, whilst also forcing it down into the ground. Van de Ven's sliding motion also causes the foot to drag along the turf as the Liverpool forward has his feet taken out from under him.

  1. The damage is done

Isak's left foot is visibly facing outwards as he begins to fall to ground, in comparison to the positioning of the "LFC" text of his sock and shin pad facing forwards on his lower left leg. It appears he has not realised the extent of the problem as he watches his shot hit its target.

  2. Standstill

Van de Ven begins to come to a halt as his body twists on the ground, further forcibly moving Isak's leg, which is still trapped in the scissor motion. The Liverpool striker falls to the ground having lost all balance.

  3. Celebrations cut short

Isak doesn't even try to get to his feet to celebrate the goal as deserved. He can only clutch his upper left leg in pain as teammates, opponents and the officials go to check on his well-being. The striker received treatment from Liverpool's medical staff before being helped from the field a mere 15 minutes after he entered as a half-time substitute.
