Man United make David Alaba decision as Carrick looks to deal with defensive issues

Manchester United have reportedly decided against making a move for David Alaba despite the experienced defender remaining available on a free transfer.
The 34-year-old left Real Madrid this summer after five years in Spain and is still searching for a new club.

Although his versatility and enormous experience initially made him an intriguing option for United, the club have chosen not to pursue a deal as they continue shifting their recruitment strategy towards younger players with long-term upside.
Man United are not pursuing David Alaba
According to the Manchester Evening News, Man United have ruled out an approach for Alaba despite recent speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick’s side remain interested in strengthening defensively, particularly at left-back and centre-back, but Alaba does not fit the age profile United are now prioritising.
Fitness is another significant concern.
Alaba has suffered major injury problems in recent seasons and missed a substantial number of matches following the ACL injury he sustained in December 2023.
Although he captained Austria at the 2026 World Cup and played all four of their matches, his club football has been far more limited.
talkSPORT reports that United’s reservations are heavily linked to his recent physical record, with the defender missing more than 100 matches across the past three seasons.
United are right to avoid another short term fix
On reputation alone, Alaba is an attractive name.
He has won the Champions League multiple times, can operate at centre-back or left-back and would immediately add leadership to Carrick’s squad.
But United’s decision still makes sense.
The club are trying to move away from expensive short-term solutions and instead build around younger players who can improve and retain value. Targets such as Lewis Hall, Alejandro Balde and other emerging defenders fit that strategy far better.
Alaba would also arrive with significant questions over durability.
United already have several experienced defenders whose availability has been inconsistent, so adding another veteran with a recent injury history could simply recreate an existing problem.
There is little doubt Alaba could still help a top side in the right circumstances, particularly if he accepts a rotational role and reduced wages.
For United, though, the bigger picture matters more.
