by Alex Butler · UPIAug. 20 (UPI) -- The Edmonton Oilers and Boston Bruins will each play two games in Germany in 2027 as part of the NHL's Global Series, the league announced Thursday.

"There is no better way to experience the speed, skill and excitement of NHL hockey than live and in person," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a news release.
"These events represent an important step in our commitment to grow the game in Germany. By bringing more NHL games to one of Europe's most dynamic hockey markets, we hope to continue to deepen engagement amongst our fans, partners and local communities, while at the same time creating a significant opportunity to grow the game throughout the country."
The first regular-season NHL game held in Germany occurred when the Buffalo Sabres beat the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 8, 2011, in Berlin. The Sabres beat German team EHC Red Bull Muchen 5-0 in a 2024 preseason game in Munich.
The Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins played two games in November in Stockholm, Sweden as part of the Global Series.
In March, the NHL announced that the Carolina Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken would play two games in November in Helsinki, Finland. The league also announced two international matchups featuring the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators that will be held in December in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The 2026 NHL regular season will launch Sept. 29.
