Oleksandr Usyk reveals who is better out of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua
by Steve Wollaston, https://www.facebook.com/stevewollastonjournalist/, Aaron Morris · Birmingham LiveUndeterred by inquiries about his toughest UK opponent, Oleksandr Usyk emphatically declared Tyson Fury as the most challenging British boxer he's ever encountered. Usyk, aged 37, extended his impressive career to 23 wins and no losses, holding onto his WBC, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles after a unanimous decision win over 'Gypsy King' Fury during their 12-round battle on Saturday.
This marked Usyk's second victory over the 36 year old within seven months, with the first being a split-decision win at the Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia last May. After spending 24 rounds – which equates to 72 minutes not counting breaks – against Fury, the Ukrainian champ has garnered great respect for his longstanding adversary.
Post-fight, at the press conference on Saturday, when probed about the most formidable British fighter he's faced, Usyk simply stated: "It's Tyson Fury."
Usyk has established his dominance over several UK world champions throughout his 11-year boxing tenure, including defeating Tony Bellew via an eighth-round knockout in November 2018, winning twice on points against Anthony Joshua, and in August of the previous year, claiming a ninth-round knockout success against Daniel Dubois.
In the aftermath of their clash, Usyk asserted his conviction that no other man he has encountered in the ring has ever given him as tough a challenge as Fury. During the post-fight press conference, Usyk conveyed considerable esteem for Fury, whom he credited with making him a stronger fighter, reports the Mirror US.
He humorously called Fury "This is my best friend," then continued more earnestly, "I'm very respectful of this guy, because I think he's very tough, my opponent. Tyson Fury makes me strong. Tyson Fury continues to - not like motivate me - but Tyson is a great opponent. He's a big man, he's a tough boxer."
He went on to say, "He's a good man. Tyson is a lot of talk, yeah? It's just show. I'm very respectful of Tyson Fury - 24 rounds, listen. Now it's already history."
Meanwhile, Dubois has made no secret of his desire to settle scores with Usyk, publicly interrupting the champion's post-fight interview to assert, "Usyk, I want my revenge. I want my revenge Usyk. Well done on tonight, well done on tonight. God bless. I want my revenge for the robbery last time, let's get it. Let's go. Where's Frank? Make it happen."
Happily accepting the call-out, Usyk turned to Turki Alalshikh, requesting, "Make me fight with Daniel Dubois, thank you so much."
During the post-fight press conference, Usyk's promoter Alex Krassyuk expressed caution about a potential matchup. He said: "Dubois has to fight Joseph Parker, and this is a very tough fight for him. I have my bet with Joseph Parker so it's too early to mention here Daniel's name in regards to Usyk."
