Gary Lineker's favourite and worst Match of the Day moments as he prepares to leave show
by Keith Wales, Patrick Austen-Hardy · Birmingham LiveGary Lineker has narrowed down his best and worst moments from presenting Match of the Day as he prepares to leave the BBC's Premier League highlights show at the end of the season.
The former Leicester City, Everton, Tottenham and Barcelona star has been the familiar face of the show since 1999 and has witnessed countless remarkable football moments. Among these, the ones involving the Foxes - his boyhood team - stand out as both his high and low points.
Reflecting on these extremes during "The Rest Is Football" podcast, Lineker didn't hesitate to recall the pinnacle of his Match of the Day career: "You know what one it is, when Leicester won the league."
However, when Micah Richards brought up the infamous moment where he presented in nothing more than Leicester-themed underwear, Lineker was quick to clarify: "No, not that one, that was my least favourite one."
This memorable incident stemmed from Lineker's risky bet during the 2015/16 Premier League season, where in December 2015 he vowed to host the show in his boxers if Leicester, then a shocking 5000/1 dark horse, secured the title, reports the Mirror.
The Foxes' claim to the title is hailed as one of the greatest shocks in English football history. Reflecting on those moments, he said: "My favourite one was when Leicester received the Premier League trophy on the final day of the season. When Claudio Ranieri came out with [Andrea] Bocelli."
"I got so emotional. I was sat in the office and I had tears down my cheeks. That was definitely my favourite moment."
When Alan Shearer enquired if Leicester's FA Cup win over Chelsea in 2021 also ranked high for him, Lineker remembered the emotion vividly. Underdog Brendan Rodgers' team trumped the west London club at Wembley Stadium on a day that featured Youri Tielemans' sensational 30-yard strike seizing the victory beneath the iconic arch.
Drama unfolded as ex-Leicester player Ben Chilwell appeared to have scored a late equaliser for Chelsea, only for it to be invalidated by a marginal offside ruling following a VAR check.
Looking back, Lineker mused: "That was special. But, I think, we're talking about the actual Match of the Day, but I guess the FA Cup final is a Match of the Day in that sense. Yes, those two. They are two things I thought I would never witness in my lifetime. They were my special ones."
